Saving when money is really tight
Start small, protect the essentials, and use the help that exists.
If you're just covering the bills, saving can feel pointless. It isn't. Even $5 a week builds the habit, and a small cushion can prevent an overdraft fee or a costly loan.
First things first
- Housing, utilities, food and transportation come before saving
- Call creditors early if you'll miss a payment; many have hardship options
- Avoid payday loans and other very high-cost credit when you can
Small steps
- Automate a tiny transfer, even $5 a payday
- Save any money that wasn't planned: a refund, a rebate, a gift
- Check benefits you may qualify for: 211 can connect you to local help
