Funds for irregular or seasonal income

Smooth out the lean months with a pay-yourself buffer.

Plan 6 min read

If you're self-employed, work on commission, or earn more in some seasons, a regular budget can feel impossible. A buffer fund turns uneven income into a steady "paycheck".

Build an income buffer

  1. Work out a baseline monthly amount you need to live on
  2. Put all income into a holding account
  3. Pay yourself the baseline each month from it
  4. In good months the surplus stays; in lean months the buffer covers the gap

Set aside for taxes

If no one withholds tax from your pay, keep a separate fund for estimated taxes and check IRS guidance on estimated payments or ask a tax professional.

Keep the emergency fund separate

With irregular income, aim for a larger emergency fund on top of the buffer.
