Guides / Sinking funds
Choose your first sinking funds
Start with three to five, based on last year's surprises.
You don't need twenty funds on day one. Start with the costs that hurt most last year.
Find them
- Look through the last 12 months of bank and card statements
- Highlight anything that isn't monthly: renewals, repairs, gifts, travel, school costs
- Group them into categories
- Pick the three to five biggest or most stressful
Set each one up
- Give it a name and a target amount
- Set a due date (or "ongoing" for repairs)
- Work out the amount per paycheck
- Decide where it lives: a separate account or a labeled bucket
