Where to keep your funds: high-yield savings basics
Safe, easy to reach and earning something.
Emergency and sinking fund money should be safe and available, not invested in things that can drop in value right when you need it. A savings account at an insured bank or credit union is the usual home.
What to compare
- APY (annual percentage yield): rates vary widely between banks and change over time
- Fees and minimum balances: look for none
- How quickly you can move money to checking
- Whether you can create named sub-accounts or buckets
Check the insurance
- Banks: FDIC insurance, generally up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category
- Credit unions: NCUA insurance with the same standard amount
- Some apps hold your money at partner banks; check how insurance applies
Keep it simple
Chasing the highest rate every few months rarely matters as much as saving consistently. Pick a solid account and focus on the habit.
