Automate it: save on payday, not at month-end
Make saving happen before you can spend the money.
Money left over at the end of the month tends to disappear. Saving on payday, automatically, is the most reliable way to build funds.
How to set it up
- Add up your monthly fund contributions
- Divide by your number of paychecks a month
- Set a recurring transfer from checking to savings for the day after payday
- Or ask your employer to split your direct deposit between accounts
Paycheck math
- Weekly pay: 52 paychecks a year
- Every two weeks: 26 a year, so two months a year have a third paycheck
- Twice a month: 24 a year
- Monthly: 12 a year
